Free As A Bird ... Almost

The mosaic symbolizing earth, air, water and fire looked like a disc about to fly off.
Thankfully, the joint art project by Deborah Putman and Connie Glover stayed stuck to the Kwomais Park grounds and not one chip broke off or lifted in the wind and rain. The recent moderate storm refreshed the air but left a leafy mess, scattering my thoughts as I pondered the "bound and/or breaking free" Poets and Storytellers United prompt.
Simultaneously bound and unbound in varying degrees, we navigate the world interdependently. While some are made helpless by outside forces impeding every move, others don self-imposed shackles due to limiting beliefs. Bound by natural laws and societal responsibilities, complete freedom is an illusion. Yet, when I am being me without pretense and moving about to wherever my whims take me, I feel free.
With all its talk about freedom, the 2024 US Democratic National Convention brought back memories of the 2017 Women's March I attended in Vancouver, Canada. Perhaps societies in general are somewhat like mosaics, replacing stale but cemented ideas bit by bit over time. A US female president could be refreshing and is boundary breaking.

  1. Beautiful poem illustrating the tensions in the word freedom.

I'm hoping that we get our first female US President this year. If we don't things are going to be tough.

  5. A female president would be cool
if one were found who's not a fool.

So far at least five have been nominated, but Dowdypants is not among them. She's so unpresidential she doesn't even talk to people who she's not sure are committed to her party. She needs to go home and think about sobriety.

  8. Freedom tempered by reality can be the right definition indeed. I think whatever the definition is, it should be equally available to everyone - that's the only way everyone can be truly free.

  15. The mosaic at Kwomais Park is such a powerful symbol of the elements and how they intertwine with our lives. Connie Glover’s art seems to perfectly capture the balance of being both bound and free in our experiences.

Your reflections on freedom and societal change resonate deeply. It’s fascinating how public art and political events can evoke such personal and collective thoughts. The comparison of societies to mosaics—constantly evolving and reshaping—is a beautiful metaphor for progress and transformation.

Thank you for sharing your insightful thoughts and encouraging us to explore the pressing issues of our time. I’ll definitely check out Poets and Storytellers United, SKYWATCH, and Saturday’s Critters.
