Wasting Time & Upbeat About The Grass Coming Back

Winter white was mostly gone and buried greenery reemerged in squishy sprigs and grasses that had been squashed like good news on a bad news day. It was relaxing to travel down a less slippery road to Kwomais Point Park overlooking Semiahmoo Bay.

The bay is part of the Pacific Ocean flowing to all the oceans, connecting us through waterways. I wanted to breathe in the sea air, feel the openness of the world and, like a familiar song (below) says, waste time in a good way. Later, at Crescent Beach, I saw the same bay but from a different perspective.

My walks are like mini vacations but there are more ways to travel without lineups, hassles or slippery roads. Listening to Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay without leaving your chair will not be a waste of time. It's like a gift basket on a cruise. Take it. This upbeat version of musical surprises is a journey to a brighter view of our world.

Fleeting Snow & Drifting Thoughts

With nowhere to go, it was fine for a wintry blast to blanket my garden Buddha. It was not long before the pristine snow dissolved into a slushy muddy mix of earth and icy rain. Its spotlessness was as improbable to keep as a pure thought that the Buddha said brought happiness: "We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves." If my backyard Buddha could talk, I would ask: Is a pure thought a selfless thought or less thought ... and why is holding one as fleeting as a snowflake melting the moment it is caught?

Holding Onto The Light

For me, personally, and I hope for you, too, 2020 started off calm and bright but on the world stage the New Year began with a chaotic bang … literally.

From the plane crash in Iran coinciding with bombings in Iraq, to earthquakes in Puerto Rico, to flames engulfing Australia (1 billion animals lost), it feels very unsafe when humankind seems unable or unwilling to coexist peacefully with nature or itself.

Among other atrocities, 176 innocents (most heading back to Canada from Iran after the holidays) maddeningly, violently, senselessly died as an accidental consequence of an escalating chain of events and reckless leadership entirely predictable in 2017.

The photo (above) was taken in 2017, the year of the first Woman's March in Vancouver. Many marches and global efforts have since occurred so one can only hope 2020 ends with wiser decisions that result in positive, not tragic, outcomes.
