Chilling Out With Mother Earth

A friendly sign on a gate to "chill out", upcoming Mother's Day and a visit to Elgin Heritage Park in South Surrey inspired my focus and few words below. Sometimes it feels like we're lost in the brambles of life and dodging thorns on our own though nurturers of all sorts abound and Earth is the caregiver to all life.

HOLD ONTO THE LIGHT

Rainy Daydreams

No, it's not raining yet but I have a glimmer of hope that showers will soon fall wherever needed. Daydreaming about rain I pulled out a scene (above) my daughter captured months ago. It is best not to have too much or too little of the soothing drops streaming down windows. Indeed, the number one topic of casual conversation is the weather that we hope will be "just right". Like Goldilocks picking at her porridge, we wish to enjoy days that are not too hot or too cold, especially after a recent taste of a brief but destructive heat wave. Forests elsewhere in B.C. are on fire and some wonder if sparks from a passing train caused the town of Lytton to burn down. In my area, however, temperatures cooled considerably and it was comfortable walking down familiar pathways seeing life anew.

A cat lazing by the side of the road looked uncomfortably hot in its furry coat.

A monkey tree was sprouting cones or balls that will likely one day expel seeds.

It is rare to see such a tree. They do provide a nice contrast in some gardens.

More common is the random piling of rocks known as Inukshuk, a sign of friendship.

Sun umbrellas come out when it isn't raining. This one lit up the beach like a lamp.

Perhaps the bird, red orb and tree symbolize love, peace, harmony and/or longevity?

We can never have too much of stabilizing factors with weather extremes popping up.

Looking Down But Feeling Up

When world events make me weary and the going seems all uphill ...

words of encouragement come along like stepping stones to a more positive outlook.

On a recent walk, messages lay at the wheels of an old decorated bicycle.

Near the beguiling bugs painted on stones and by the twigs and shells ...

advice I could appreciate, about looking up, was written on a rock in freehand.

Another rock said be kind and a seashell (below) advised be helpful.

Forgiveness (suggested below) is perhaps the toughest but wisest of paths to follow. Despite wrongs done, rising above old grievances could lead us all to a better place.

What's Next?

"My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic." - Jack Layton

What's my next move, the squirrel seemed to be thinking while my thoughts, (on a walk to the beach fresh after the US election), were on words by Canadian New Democratic Party leader, Jack Layton. Layton passed away in 2011 but his message from the current Party leader was sent to Joe Biden who, in his victory speech, said cooperation is no mystery, it's a choice.

Earth floats the universal sea with mathematical precision while our lives hang in the balance serendipitously. Consciously or unconsciously, we make decisions impacting our survival that depends on a positive spirit of cooperation to solve problems from those who did (like me) or did not breathe a huge sigh of relief post election.

Will there be constant choppy waters ahead and/or creeping cooperation that will build back better? Since positivity, too, is a choice, Layton's words ring true today.

My friends, love is better than anger.

Hope is better than fear.

Optimism is better than despair.

So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic.

Still the kid I used to be

Through The Looking Glass

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” - quote by Robert Brault

I walked by a home displaying a rainbow in the window. Lest we forget, essential workers are needed more than ever the heart-shaped cutouts seemed to say.

It was a day of many little things that caught my eye like the neatly gathered cutlery. I had no explanation as to why these handiest of human utensils were put by the road.

Nearby, pretty bits of fluff flashed their autumn star power.

As if current events weren't scary enough, ghosts were spooking the neighbourhood.

A Canada goose floated lazily on the seawater ... probably a well-deserved rest. From a distance, it looked similar to every goose yet no two feathers were exactly alike.

A still leaf lay frozen in a birdbath.

Leaves fell sleepily and without much ado changed colours and shapes as I passed by. Everything was quietly transforming and re-creating itself.

Is any part of a creative universe ever really ordinary?

If the "little things" and implicit everyday stuff of life were not so familiar, they'd seem far stranger than what Alice saw in Through The Looking Glass. Incredibly, we are witness to, and reflect as mirrors do, the cosmic story of existence.
