It's Been A Long Time Coming

Oh, no, it's going to snow, according to the weatherman.

I am not yet fully recovered from my fall so I won't be making snowballs or building a snowman. Honestly, I have done neither in years and the flakes will hopefully be of the sloppy, slushy, short-lived kind.

Since the path was clear for the moment, I took a walk to Kwomais Point Park and scanned the horizon, admiring the free-floating birds in a cloud-scattered sky.

A dog was laser focused on returning the ball so he could chase it all over again. The pet's clarity of purpose and perpetual romp in the now was impressive.

Living in the moment isn't so simple for humans, I thought, indulging in a hot brew and some prose upon returning home.
It can feel like grasping at mist when trying to live in the now. Rarely do we stop there as thoughts swing back and forth from a past we can't forget to a future we hope for or fear. Life is a series of phases and we often want to move on from present difficulties, anticipating a brighter horizon. When we get there, new challenges arise so on we go, wishing for a next phase, forgetting to be mindful of the moment. To overcome crises and grow, of course, we must revisit the past sometimes as well as believe in better tomorrows. But the Poets and Storytellers prompt "it's been a long time coming" brought to mind that what comes naturally to children fades between adolescence and adulthood and the way back to that sweet spot is an inside journey down a long road of effort that the right song can bring into focus in an instant. HOLD ONTO THE LIGHT

Stranger Than Fiction

Her giggle bounced on ripples of sound
Like wizard wands, stirring up galaxies
Not a god or witch but born spellbound
Just a drop on a dot able to shift reality

Paradox abounds. We're tiny and weak yet at the same time powerful and impactful creating ripple effects. Survival is baked in yet those instincts wane when it comes to protecting Mother Earth and, therefore, ourselves. The Poets and Storytellers prompt "stranger than fiction" has me wondering if we are asking the right questions about existence. Who, what, when, why, where and how filter through our brains seemingly incapable of comprehending creation at its core. So we conjure up stories to explain the pieces we can grasp with our senses, knowing that a good plot is at the heart of every well-crafted tale. Wouldn't it be strange to learn someday that humankind was the channel by which the cosmos sought to know itself? The truth about existence is surely infinitely weirder than any science fiction novel written. It is the mystery that keeps us exploring, curious to know more, wanting to believe it is solvable.

Sky Candy & Recipes For Disaster

The reflective bit of sky candy swirled like a twisted piece of licorice in a mostly gray and rainy week as my thoughts turned to something less palatable on the menu.
Whether one is investing their heart, finances or both, there are schemers whose true intentions are shady and sadly lead to disaster and financial ruin. It usually begins with a hope, a need, a dream unrealized. This longing creates vulnerability and room for the "ponzi" schemer to entice with grand promises. Mixing a dash of hope with a spoonful of shady results in a meal that is none too tasty. But it is what came to mind for the Poets and Storytellers United prompt "recipe" due to this recent story in the news.

POSTSCRIPT Feb. 9, 2023: Loss of love or money pales in comparison to the devastation caused by last Monday's 7.8 earthquake in Turkey and Syria which at this writing resulted in more than 19,000 people killed and tens of thousands injured. Our horror and hearts go out to the victims. It is clear that a recipe for increasing the impact of such disasters are the many homes built with poor structural integrity, some existing amid a civil war. It is also all too easy to speculate that the reverberations of heavy weaponry perhaps played a role in agitating the earth to such a massive scale.
