Beneath The Pillowy Blue

"What is unknown until you do it is that there is this pillow, this soft blue. Look at the beauty of that colour - it’s so thin and you’re through it in an instant." - W. Shatner

Barely audible amid the gleeful chatter of his younger fellow travelers, 90-year old Star Trek star, William Shatner, was rife with emotion and teary-eyed when he returned from his first true encounter with outer space. Seeing Earth pale and vulnerable in the distance, floating in an inky black well, was clearly impactful. He saw the planet's thin covering hovering, like the flimsy substance over an eyeball, absorbing harmful ultraviolet light. Varying from some nine and 18 miles above us, this ozone layer is a necessity for life. Poking through the protective "lens" with human inventions likely does it no good yet first-hand visual reports such as Shatner's provide remarkable awareness and empathy for the globe. Although no view compares to Earth in space, here are the autumn scenes I found recently on the ground beneath the "pillowy" blue.

  1. Autumn colors are amazing; on gray days they are magical.

  2. The first picture intrigues me, as does Shatner's description with the word pillow in it. These are all lovely scenes. The sunflower is kind of Halloween scary.

    1. Haha … the normally sunny flower does appear a bit scary to suit the season!

  3. Lovely Fall Colors!
I am intrigued by the photo with what appears to be a trailer bed with a picket fence behind it and behind that a house with a blue door... And a puddle with a reflection of words that aren't in the shot! Amazing photo!

    1. It does look like a lovely mystery! I unintentionally created an illusion with two photos, one after the other. The trailer is a separate photo of the bottom half of a truck with signage at the top-half that we see only as a reflection in the puddle. Haha ... I sometimes wonder if existence is something like that where seeing only bits and pieces of a spectrum provides a distorted and misleading view of the cosmic story. :)

  6. Your collection of beautiful photos reminds us why we must change our ways and save the planet. William Shatner looked great and so excited to be viewing the world from above.

  7. It was quite the story, about the space travel. Colossal waste of money, I think.

  11. Oh, my…, what magic spell did you cast on the first image? The railway tracks and the path stretching to somewhere look showing progressing season to me. I wonder what the stone faces are talking to us and am always amazed with the aged worn-out sunflower after hardworking of scattering seeds for the offspring. I read your comment about the reflection photo with interests. My impression is that less is more to stimulate our imagination.
