Why Does Anything Exist

It's human nature to ask why. We've done it since childhood. Humankind is propelled by curiosity, isn't it? Because we need reasons, it's inconceivable to most that creation exists for its own sake with no particular point or purpose. Scientists and mystics learn over time while we fill in the blanks with our stories. Pondering in verse the Poets and Storytellers United word prompt "why", I sought calm in a world overfull with drama.
Along the shore, I saw swimmers floating with ease.
Nearby, windows reflected the heavens.
Moody clouds whisked along the blue sky.
A cozy house nestled amid the foliage.
Plants said their final goodbyes.
Autumn glowed around every corner.
Some flowers hesitated to go.
Trees were ablaze.
Paths were littered with leaves.
Forests shrugged off the clutter.
The stairwell took me to a deeper level.
A gate closed to the coming cold.
The cat settled into a Buddha pose.
Although the truth about existence eluded me, a new song about liars by Dolly Parton gave me odd comfort ... her words perhaps more suited to last week's post.

  1. Hello,
Love the gorgeous fall colors. Pretty sky watch photos. It's too bad we can't create the things we wish to exist. Peace and happiness. Take care, have a great day!

  5. A poetic and beautiful post. I love the swimmers. What a sight, I love the mysterious staircase, and the leaves and the pumpkins and all the mystery. It's okay for some things to remain a mystery.

  6. Wonderful Post! Poem and Photos! :) Dolly's Song most Poignant.
Am having to come to grips with the impermanence of matter reality, life as it was... and even humanity as we know it... Eckhart Tolle says even the Earth will die...
Maybe Buddha cat is asking similar questions as us, in her/his Buddha Pose... Amazing what we see/hear through the keyhole of space-time - when we brush away the clouds of the mind...
I'm Feeling more and more like a stranger in this world myself, its energy seems so heavy and distorted these days...
Am curious to watch the video on Mystics :)

    1. About the Mystic link I provided … my thoughts differ from the author somewhat. He describes a mystic moment quite well but being mystic doesn't mean blissful at all times … that would be too strange. :)

  7. A great question and the hardest and a great poem Yes all the world is a stage. We only get to look through a keyhole and still don't get much answers. I think we don't know much yet. There is much more between heaven and earth Your photos are beautiful I love that staircase and the beautiful gate

  9. I'm comfortable with the idea of creation existing for its own sake. I also reserve the option to make up my own purpose for my own life, if/when I care to. Your photo captions are like another poem (if you put a full stop after 'comfort').

  10. Tell it, Dolly! My poem goes with her song well. "What's it all about, Alfie?" has been my life theme song. I've enjoyed my visit here, perusing of all the pieces that engage the senses.

  12. I won't touch an answer, it might be crazy. I like your pictures, I always do. We might not have an Autumm this year, we are still running in the 90F's and come mid December may have a freeze. That is southeast Texas along the Gulf of Mexico.

  19. Why exist at all... that truly is the question, isn't it.. what is our purpose. I've reconciled to us being just random manifestations of matter - and yet then the question of good and bad becomes complicated. Lovely pictures as always, especially those stairs with the leaves... !!! Rosemary is right, those captions can be woven together!!

  21. We have an almost-three-year-old great-granddaughter, and as you guess, the word "why" is in very frequent use. I am glad to see her parents and grandparents (my daughter and sil) doing their best not to just answer "because." But answers never get easier. We get older and eventually stop asking frequent questions out loud, even though they get harder. Answers remain elusive.
