Fanning The Flames Of Extreme Weather

Rain puddles vanished and a blast of scorching heat settled over B.C. recently, including in my region which reached 105 °F at one point. Records were broken. (About 145 miles northeast in Lytton it was over 120 degrees; the entire village caught fire.) The air outside felt like a thick wall of hot steel. All fans were on duty indoors. The weather foretold of the wasteland that will arrive sooner rather than later if carbon emissions are not majorly reduced. Dozens of mostly elderly didn't survive the wake up call. At this writing, the heat is far less intense, thankfully. A sweet sense of normalcy has returned and the slight morning chill sits on my shoulders like a delicate shawl.

In my neighbourhood, the birds are singing again and searching for treats.

A different kind of wave also hit us all. I was relieved to get my second shot "to knockout Covid" on Canada Day. It was a perfect way to celebrate July 1st.

  1. Maria - I could not agree with you more; I am personally volunteering with a group called Citizens' Climate Lobby, which is advocating for US federal legislation to put a price on carbon and return those fees to all Americans as a monthly dividend. If passed, it would get the US to zero emissions by 2050.

    1. Bravo to you and your group! Many of us simply deny, complain and/or worry but you are actually doing something to help.

  2. Hello,

I was hearing about the heat wave in your area and in the western USA. It sounds terrible and the risk of fires is not good. I am glad to hear there is break in the weather. Some rain would be welcomed too. Great news, you are vaccinated. Love the cute bird. Take care, enjoy your weekend.

  4. I’ve heard the news that the heat wave on the west coast of North America topped 50 degrees C. It is not only unbearable but also life-threatening. 37-38C is the highest I’ve experienced, but near the asphalt surface must have been nearly 50 or higher. It is advised not to carry babies in a buggy or a pushchair under such weather. Air-conditioner is a must in my country’s notorious sweltering, sizzling, scorching summer. My second dose of vaccine is coming Friday. That’s a relief. Your electric fan made me nostalgic, I like it. Stay cool and take care.

  6. I think we have already passed the tipping point and whatever we do now is too little, too late. It's not as though we haven't had ample warning for so long. Yet the PC Party of Canada still cannot even brings itself to acknowledge climate change. We are doomed!

    1. I agree the PC Party has taken far too long to come to the table and it is not certain if they have yet to accept and/or fully comprehend the severity. So much stubborn opposition to reality is a death knell to all existence. But I still like to think we have a slight window to extend life.

  7. We had 3 days of very high temps with humidity in New England which is not the norm ~ then we had almost a week of low temps and rain ~ erratic weather everywhere I guess ~
We really do need to deal with 'climate change' and see pockets of people beginning to do so ~ hoping for the best ~ Xo

  9. Those temperatures are frightening. Glad you are getting a little respite from the heat at the moment. This is what we will all be experiencing soon with climate change.

  10. I can't believe the extreme heat you have been experiencing. Glad it's cooling off, but sadly, this is the future unless we do something about climate change.

  11. When our temps went so high (not as high as yours but terrible enough) I thought about you and your advocacy for what I hope is not a lost cause. We too have returned to more normal summer temps here in Oregon, but for how long? And now worried about another fire season. Meanwhile watching the earlier-than-usual almost hurricane due to hit near our Florida home. Sigh. Will be sink into the water or burn up first?

  12. I heard it got up to 120, that's mind boggling! Sad and horrific to hear of the fire. I hope you all get the relief needed, sounds like a little from your comment. May it continue to be that way.
