Through The Looking Glass

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” - quote by Robert Brault
I walked by a home displaying a rainbow in the window. Lest we forget, essential workers are needed more than ever the heart-shaped cutouts seemed to say.
It was a day of many little things that caught my eye like the neatly gathered cutlery. I had no explanation as to why these handiest of human utensils were put by the road.
Nearby, pretty bits of fluff flashed their autumn star power.
As if current events weren't scary enough, ghosts were spooking the neighbourhood.
A Canada goose floated lazily on the seawater ... probably a well-deserved rest. From a distance, it looked similar to every goose yet no two feathers were exactly alike.
A still leaf lay frozen in a birdbath.
Leaves fell sleepily and without much ado changed colours and shapes as I passed by. Everything was quietly transforming and re-creating itself.
Is any part of a creative universe ever really ordinary?
If the "little things" and implicit everyday stuff of life were not so familiar, they'd seem far stranger than what Alice saw in Through The Looking Glass. Incredibly, we are witness to, and reflect as mirrors do, the cosmic story of existence.

Spookiest Halloween Ever

What could be scarier than a pandemic? The ghostly virus haunting the world right now has made trick-or-treating a bit more difficult this Halloween. For the first time in decades I won't be inviting children to our door or giving out treats.

The howling seasonal weather is inviting windsurfers to Crescent Beach, however, where men strapped themselves to big crescent moon kites that flew to the sky.

It looked like hard work getting them ready for flight but seemed worth the effort.

I imagined casting cares to the wind and bumping along on the rough water.

The bubbly sudsy waves surged in and out from the shore when suddenly ...

a couple of kayakers appeared.

Their pumpkin coloured paddles reminded me of decorations at many homes this time of year. Activities somewhat curtailed, the spirit of Halloween is alive and well ... brightening front porches and delighting the kid in us all.

Treasure Hunter Amid The Drops

Like pirates of old, we are all treasure hunters. The man (above) hopes to find his "riches" buried within the muddy Crescent Beach shores.

Others hunt for birds to observe like those (below) gathered in a deepening sunset.

Did you collect things when you were a child? I had a passion for autumn leaves.

These leftover blooms of summer were my treasures.

Because of the frequent rain, I would often need to dry out my soggy finds.

It was fun to press the finest of these possessions firmly into my bulging scrapbooks.

In those days, I sought perfection to proudly show my teachers.

Now I'm older and less "perfect" myself I see a broader range of beauty.

Nature paints more vividly in fall when leafy wings detach and flutter to the ground.

Mysterious murky browns and grays settle more subtly amid the brighter hues.

My camera is a scrapbook now.

I gladly let rain-soaked foliage sleep wherever it falls.

Curling, twisting, shredding, melding ...

I collect these gems only as photos now before they're swept to the dustbins of time.

The Cosmic Dance That Never Ends

Is anything ever completely still or at rest for even one-thousandth of a second? Existence, seen and unseen, is never truly motionless or calm, although a photograph appears to stop time mid-action. Molecules within living cells are in constant flux as are the atomic structures of inanimate objects. Coordinated chaos is a continuous dance on the cusp of its next ballet. Cosmic forces are at perpetual play during, after and before you get off that chair, the fish is caught, the cat pounces, the petals fall, the berry is plucked or a peacock feather is ruffled. There is no flight from this remarkable choreography that binds us together.

The little fairy my daughter sketched so long ago in a rose petal dress reminded me of the cosmic dance that never stops and is why I am linking to PAINT PARTY FRIDAY.
