O Canada, A Sing Along Song & Maple Leaf Waving

Several years ago my daughter and three friends sang "O Canada" in harmony with no instrumental accompaniment. Their voices resonate particularly as we approach Canada Day and contemplate this country's bounty and heritage. Officially becoming Canada's anthem on July 1, 1980, the tune was first sung 100 years earlier. Composed by Calixa Lavallée, the French lyrics are by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. Robert Stanley Weir wrote the English version later. Do you like your country's anthem? National anthems set the tone of a country and instill belonging. The world's second-largest country, Canada sends a unifying message to a vast land. My wish is that this diverse nation strives more for goodness than greatness and is ever more just towards all.

    I agree, the song and the singing is beautiful. I've heard it a few times at sporting events. Canada should be proud of that song.

    The USA Anthem, its okay but kind of hard to sing and has a lot of war imagery. I kind of like America the Beautiful myself as a good alternate candidate.

    Wonderful I think a national anthem is something which makes people feel belong to their people and country

    I thought "All our sons" had been changed to "All of us." I do quite like our anthem but I am not given to bursts of national fervour, which all too often lead to xenophobia, jingoism and resentment of the other.

      You're right! In support of gender equality, and after years of trying, the Senate did pass a Bill to replace "in all our sons command" with "in all of us command". It became the official words in 2018. This is several years after my daughter and friends sang their version of the song.

    Awesome singing voice and O Canada is full of patriotic feeling. At sportive events, I like to listen to each country’s national anthem. My country’s is uniquely and distinctively Japanese. Very short lyrics is from the 10th century poem presented to an elderly person. Wish you and your country a Happy Canada Day!

    Thanks for sharing the lyrics to Canada's national anthem. I agree with Yogi's comment. "America the Beautiful" would be my preference, especially the lines "... and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea."

    Thanks for visiting my illustration blog! I used to fly into Canada a lot as a flight attendant. I remember one layover during Canada day. Unfortunately, I flew over our fourth of July many times. Other holidays too.

    I admit I do *not* much like our US Natl Anthem at all...its all about war. And it’s hard to sing. We have other patriotic songs that are much better.

    I love a capella music, especially with harmony. The ladies executed this so well; it is stirring. I am moved every time I hear the Star Spangled Banner … Wishing you a Happy Canada Day!

The Door To Forest Magic At Sandy Trail

There it was ... a bright dollop of sunshine in a tangle of forest greens, browns and silvery grays. The yellow door snuggled against a tree said Fairy Hall and, in tiny faint lettering beneath, No Trolls . Oh, how I'd love to know what goes on inside Fairy Hall. I wanted to tap on the door but, a giant by comparison, I didn't want to cause a scare. I often take the Sandy Trail with its gravelly path, woodsy stumps, well-trod stairs, rabbits, birds and squirrels. I know every twist and rustling sound. But I hadn't noticed the small door before. This unexpected bit of whimsy magic tucked into the forest floor made me curious about what else was in the mysterious thicket I'd yet to explore. When I continued on my way, the trees leaned in ... as if they had something to say. Later, I found another fairy door (below), welcoming but only to a select few. Fanning The Flames Of Extreme Weather

Rain puddles vanished and a blast of scorching heat settled over B.C. recently, including in my region which reached 105  ° F at one point. Records were broken. (About 145 miles northeast in Lytton it was over 120 degrees; the entire village caught fire.) The air outside felt like a thick wall of hot steel. All fans were on duty indoors. The weather foretold of the wasteland that will arrive sooner rather than later if carbon emissions are not majorly reduced. Dozens of mostly elderly didn't survive the wake up call. At this writing, the heat is far less intense, thankfully. A sweet sense of normalcy has returned and the slight morning chill sits on my shoulders like a delicate shawl.    In my neighbourhood, the birds are singing again and searching for treats.  A different kind of wave also hit us all.
