Far Apart, Yet Far Too Near

Physical distancing got a temporary reprieve. Keeping apart kept COVID-19 down but recent protests crammed people shoulder-to-shoulder in many places of our world. (This will likely cause a spike in cases.) Inadequate masks slid down faces as people shouted outrage at the awful killing of a man. Vancouver had a large peaceful protest about what happened to George Floyd HERE. Meanwhile, two men went up in space. Such pioneering efforts in some faraway future will perhaps result in humans finding the distance they seem to require. Society's problems could be solved calmly and kindly. But for some, Earth is too small to accommodate the desires and needs of all.

  1. Hello,
The days of peaceful protesting seems over, when instigators and outsiders are encouraged to show up just to start trouble. The scenes in your photos look so peaceful and pretty. I am wishing for happier and peaceful times in our world. Take care! Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy new week!

  3. Hope in the distance .... a visit to the coast, even virtually, always brings peaceful feelings. And perhaps space exploration may eventually bring the human race some solutions. We’re pretty much messing up this planet right now. I feel like we need a lot of short-term help in the meantime.

  4. And the cicadas drone here like a collective protest. I couldn't care much about the space trip with all that is going on here. Lovely and peaceful mood shots.

  7. Dear Penelope - What’s happening in the USA is poignant. The two beach photos are so atmospheric that work on my imagination that we are travelers in history. The first one makes me feel nostalgic; the second makes me imagine the time coming soon. They restore my peace of mind from the thought that humans are heart aching creatures. Enjoy your day and take care.

  8. 2020 has been a mess so far. We've had peaceful protests here in Tulsa and then riots and looting last night about a half mile from our house.

  9. I went to Tofino two springs ago with Yvonne Maximchuk to transfer some of her paintings in galleries. It's a beautiful place. It's nice to hear the tribute to George Floyd was peaceful in Vancouver. The one here in Bellingham was a memorial display in front of the closed library downtown. So horrible about the way a few people made peaceful protests into looting riots. And even worse how it has turned into a military action. I've been through three in my life before, one the Watts Riots when I was a teenager living nearby in Compton, and the two for Rodney King in Los Angeles. I never went out to protest but saw the damage and some of the short-lived improvements. - Margy

  10. A very sad week indeed. We have just had the longest discussion about yesterday with our son (on the phone). We are all left shaking our heads in disbelief at the sights we saw on TV, and angered by many. Having cell phones is going to be a catalyst for change, hopefully. Good people stories coming out too, good people out there protecting others. Unfortunately a lot of phony photos are being sent around, with an insidious agenda. I wonder about those too. That all being said something has to change here.

  13. There is no doubt in my mind that our current leadership (US) has contributed to divisiveness. People are taking advantage of it, and no-one benefits. I pray that we will have a change of leadership in the fall.
