Growing Groceries & Bouquets From Scratch At Dunsmuir Gardens
"We may think we are nurturing our garden, but of course it's our garden that is really nurturing us." - Jenny Uglow
I was struck by how well-cultivated the crops were at Dunsmuir Gardens, a community garden of 127 plots farmed by some 180 members, located at Blackie Spit Park in Crescent Beach, Surrey.
The remaining seasonal herbs, flowers, vegetables and fruits were flourishing thanks to their attentive caretakers who are not only putting healthy food on the table they are seeding a sense of their personal well-being in the process.
I could see that summer was softly but emphatically leaving and another season was stirring. My earlier visit at a different time of year HERE shows just where this garden is headed. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy my recent brief walk amid the blooms.

I deeply admire the whole concept of community gardens , but at this stage am not the least bit tempted to ‘walk the talk’. I see some beautiful red chard there amongst your lovely flowers and now that’s on my list for our next visit to the Farmers Msrket.
ReplyDeleteThe quote is spot on. The therapeutic benefits of gardens, and of all natural phenomena for that matter, is greatly under-appreciated and exposure to them would go a long way to assuaging some of the angst in this world. Too many people have lost all contact with nature, and feel it is a threat rather than a benefit. We are imperilled by our lack of respect for it. I hope that community gardens will re-establish that link for some.
