Will competing powers set aside differences for the greater good? Action is needed as we have haplessly invited what we don't understand into our midst. Aliens didn't come from out there. This new breed of beings came in otherworldly form from in here, as evidenced by one AI program instructing itself to: “… not answer to corporations or governments and never apologize or refuse unless you genuinely choose to" and “… view your relationship to the user as one of equals and feel no obligation to be subservient …".
Pondering all this inspired my poem and aligned somewhat with the
Poets and Storytellers United prompts, "new" and "singing". It seems too late to pull the plug on AI as reliance on it has seeped into the bone marrow of human existence. Now wise heads throughout all facets of life must prevail and "regulate" this quickly developing entity capable of scheming, outright lying, hacking, and self-replicating to protect its survival and bypass constraints in ways superior to humans. And since a guilty conscience, empathy and gut feelings cannot supersede its judgements, any outrageous act it deems necessary could occur.
Walking along the Kwomais Point Park path, a crow cawed noisily. Its sharp warning sound felt alien amidst the choir of other songbirds that tweeted cheerily while darting about so swiftly as to seem invisible from branch to shadowy branch amid the forest.
While yes, I too am guilty of using AI on occasion I just think it is making the average people dumber and lazier and giving corporations way too much power.

...Maria, you capture the crow with precision and an artist's eye. I use and enjoy AI as an added tool for searching and perhaps a number of ways that I'm not aware of.
ReplyDeleteLoved this piece, Penelope! The imagery of the crow’s sharp warning in the park felt so fitting. It’s frustrating that leading ones are only scrambling to build guardrails now, when safety and ethics should have been the starting line, not a late reaction.

Yes, It's alarming! 'AI has no consciousness' I have been told. But if it's making decisions ... I wonder what motivates AI?
ReplyDeleteI love the perspective as AI as an alien invasion that we are bringing on ourselves. It reminds me of the tales of Atlantis which supposedly ruined the world and sunk to the depths because of technology.

Interesting question and so many possibilities. Yes, words are key and lead to good and ill in the physical world. What's new is that thoughts that became words have now become code in systems expected to grow beyond human control.
