Novel Journeys

April is National Poetry Month in Canada. Learn why poetry matters HERE.

The Poets and Storytellers United prompt "find inspiration on your bookshelf" inspired my poem and reminded me of when libraries visited my neighbourhood. As a child, I looked forward to when a large van pulled up to our street, the side door slid open and I entered a cozy room stuffed with adventures that swept me to distant shores of the imagination. These books felt like friends. Some I kept close for reading at bedtime as I drifted to sleep, rapt by fantasies. Now my travels are mostly outside the pages as I walk about my tiny place on a planet that is a footnote in a cosmic story yet to be told.

  1. beautiful poem I love 'Slip down inky tunnels' and 'crack open wit's spine' and how cool to have had a van with books come up to your house. What a cute rabbit and I love these little libraries I would love to have one.

  2. I love the second photo. Beautiful sky, and a bit like a painting. The bunny looks like a stuffed animal toy!

  3. I love your poem. I loved our small town library when I was a kid. Reading is mainly what I did in the summer.
That rabbit with the leash is just the cutest.

  4. I like the message on the man's jacket - ignore what's negative. Ah, the bunny on a leash - I thought at first it was a stuffed toy and wondered about the leash. Silly me. I do love bunnies and the idea of a bunny on a leash.

  5. I remember getting on a bus, having popcorn, going to see a movie then heading over to the library and then going home all for twenty-five cents. We were allowed only two books to check out at the library. Love, love your pet rabbit. It was on a leash. That's different. Enjoy the weekend ahead.

    1. Amazing how far 25 Cents could get you back in the day. The pet rabbit is adorable but not mine. However, we did have a pet rabbit for many years before he died at an old rabbit age; Oliver would not have tolerated a leash, I don't think. :)

  6. ...I wish that I was a bit better at ignoring what's negative, I'm still working on that. Your national flag is simple and simply beautiful! And the lane between the waterfront and the homes is a gorgeous sight.

  9. Love to dive between the lines. Loved the pictures, a bag of cotton that looks like cloud, a dog that seems to be rabbit, a snake that looks like a log 😀

  10. Lovely photos!! This makes me think of the bookmobile that used to come once a month to our country school. The best thing to happen in that provincial area. The fondest of memories.

  12. There's magic in the connections made between the words on the page and our imagination. Nicely written Penelope 👏

  13. Yes, books are magic! I too was introduced to books and libraries early in my life, and am so thankful to parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who fostered the love of reading.

  15. Hello, Maria
I love all your images and poem. I often feel like I am traveling while reading some books. I have never seen a bunny on a leash, it is a good way to keep them safe outside. Beautiful flowers and sky capture. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend.

  16. OH I love the energy in your poem, it reads like a gentle command, a roadmap of how to traverse the book. Brava!!! Love the photography as always and the original art.

  17. There was a library in the basement of the church I went to and every Sunday after mass I got to go to that library to pick out a book to take home. Your poem is lovely!

  18. Hello :)
I love the photo of that cute public library, the view of the cottenwool fluffy clouds, the tulips and bluebells, the cute grey bunny, and the ducks. Lovely poem too. I hope to be able to read again after my cataract surgery this week, Yippee
    Have a happy week,

  20. The magic of books has never left me, real books, new books, musty old books, hardcover, soft cover, tragedy, comedy, poetry, fiction, non-fiction. As long as there is a book close at hand happiness is guaranteed.
