I've never counted them but the decades-old stairs named
1001 Steps in the Ocean Park area were recently upgraded from wooden to metal.
Over the years I've walked down and back up, many times puffing for breath.
At the bottom there is a narrow path alongside a railway that leads to a small graffiti laden tunnel beneath the track to the rocky beach.
The stones make walking along the shore a bit unstable and it's more fun to just sit on one of the larger rocks and soak in the seaside atmosphere and muse about life.
The original signage and steps inspired a Penelope art card that says, "You can if you think you can." Whether challenged by steps or stones, a belief in one's own capabilities helps achieve success.
The photo of me (below) was taken several years ago at the same location. Like the stairs, I could probably use an upgrade.
Wish I could say I am as agile as I was then ... but I guess I am, if I think I am?

Humans rely more than ever on AI for information and help with a myriad of routine tasks. But it's a weird symbiotic relationship because AI gleans its data from human activity on the web, dipping even into the pool of casual bloggers. I've noticed an unusual uptick in my traffic and suspect it is more from AI bots scraping my data (and maybe yours, too) than random people searching the Internet. Bots have an insatiable appetite, aptly addressed in an article (hopefully written by a human ) HERE . The fact that we incidentally feed a beast that learns from us was of no consequence to the squirrel, however, on a blue sky day when I met real and fake creatures along my way, inspiring my poem below. You might also enjoy reading AI's beautifully and instantly crafted response (bottom of post) when I asked it to compare itself to humans. Looking for blue to peek through the hazy skies lately. Along my way I've been thinking about the Ukrainian girl who traveled to America for safety and ended up dead due to a stranger's violent psychotic act. Angels sent her from her homeland believing in safer outcomes but something demonic found her regardless. And tragically no angels helped the mother calling/pleading for help for her mentally ill son before he became a killer. I have no explanation why bad things happen to innocent people, just a poem that ponders the coexistence of good and evil, each causing random ripple effects from which we cannot detach. Remember the beloved children's tale The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch? She had only a paper bag to wear after a dragon destroyed her castle and belongings. The shallow prince whom she rescued showed his true nature by complaining she didn't look like a princess dressed in that bag. Good riddance to the prince but here are some paper dresses any royal or awesome regular girl would be proud to wear. I came upon these works of art at the Oakridge Mall in Vancouver. Hopefully, they will end up in a local museum or someplace where more people will enjoy them. The lovely regal garments made of paper capture the elements and majesty of the natural world. The Langara College Paper Couture Exhibition by Vancouver design students explains what materials are used to create the clothing: "All of the dresses are made from a variety of recyclable white or brown paper, tissue, tapes, glue, spray paint, adhesives, paper twine, coffee filters, cardboard, string, thum...
Looks like a pretty area. The 1001 steps must be quite a workout!!
ReplyDeleteNice steps, now they need to weed that path and make that tunnel look less sketchy! Looks like a lovely place once you arrive.
ReplyDeleteI counted them once. I can't remember how many there were, but less than the 1,001, anyhow. But still, too much for me to do in one go. Once, walking up, some young guy came running down, then returned, then went back down again, then up ... And I was still plodding along, watching my step, holding the rail. Grrr!
ReplyDeleteThat view; the rocks down the beach; it's amazing how just that placement of rocks, just that water, and I knew instantly where you were standing. Feels like home!
It's so nice to know you and I have walked the same steps though at different times. :)
DeleteI love local things like that. What an adventure getting up and down those steps.
ReplyDeleteGreat memories by those steps!
ReplyDeleteGood to see the maintenance and upgrade of the 1001 steps. The graffiti art looks fabulous!
ReplyDelete...I'd be huffing and puffing for sure. Often graffiti is out of place, these add a bright spot!
ReplyDeleteLovely post and photos ~ amazing stairway ~ fun yet challenging too ~ hugs,

ReplyDeleteImpressive to go up and down all those steps! Very nice of them to add the bench. It would be nice to sit and have a rest :) That’s a rock I could sit on and spend a couple of hours looking out at the ocean. Love the Penelope art card quote too. Very true on that quote, we can do so much if we are determined to do it. And how lovely to see you! Happy July!
It's a beautiful stairwell and pathway to the rocky beach. I always love a beach scene.
ReplyDeleteWowza! I would love to be there and do what you are doing. The stairwell, the pathway, the rocky beach, enjoying even the graffiti. I collect rocks. This is like paradise.
ReplyDeleteThe winding jungle-gym-like set of steps and the small graffiti laden tunnel stirs up the child-like excitement in me. I like it when I leave the tunnel, I find myself at the rocky beach. It reminds me of the first sentence of a famous novel Snow Country; “The train came out of the long tunnel into the snow country.” I also warped into the past through the link. 13 years! Where has the time gone? I’m happy to have built up friendship with you, Maria.

Didn't time fly! We share many similar sensibilities, Yoko, and it's fun seeing your part of the world through your eyes. Ours is a consistent friendship I truly appreciate!
DeleteGraffiti drives me mildly crazy! I must say that you were looking good and any upgrade would only serve to accentuate your natural beauty and enthusiasm for life. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteI'd rather do 101, but the ocean is worth it!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting area, I'd love to run up and down those steps, but I don't think I would be able to manage any running, more like puffing and panting and staggering. And the tunnel is so neat, I don't mind the graffiti, I think it's very creative.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures. I agree.. if you keep on at it.. keep thinking you can then surely you can.
