Strength In Numbers For The Year 2 0 2 2

"If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading." - Buddha

Does a new year and number signify change or continuation of the same? I hope for the former but suspect the latter, especially after seeing Don't Look Up on Netflix. Critics say the movie missed the mark on satire but to me the passive public's discombobulating reaction to a massive comet hurtling to Earth hit too close to home. I once thought a common enemy would pull the world together but the pandemic and climate crisis suggest otherwise. Humanity divides as readily as it unifies. The year 2022 has me grasping at straws and even stumbling upon an odd bit of comfort from numerologists who believe 2’s can inspire compromise between deeply opposing sides. Might triple 2's predict growing unity needed to increase chances of our survival? Each snowflake, breath and raindrop is a miracle hanging in the balance. My gratitude goes to those across the globe who do what's right in small or large doses to make us safer.

  1. We just saw "Don't Look Up" too and agree with your take on it - "the passive public's discombobulating reaction" to what was going on, thought they did a wonderful job of showing that, and disagree with the critics' take about missing the mark on satire... And then there's the divisiveness that still pervades with the pandemic worsening, as you mention. People are behaving as if it doesn't exist! (as with the comet in the movie) with blaring disrespect for "reality." I am amazed at the sense of entitlement that pervades our culture, as if nothing will happen to "them." Very disheartening... And I wonder if what we're experiencing is a peek into man's "true nature"? One can only hope not. Then watching the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square using superficial entertainment as distraction to what's really going on - like changing the page on a calendar is really going to change anything...

We need a collective "awakening", and a collective rewiring of our brains! :)

  2. Hello,
I have been wanting to watch Don't Look Up, it seems to be popular right now. People are so divided right now and seem so angry. We need more people to do the "right thing" with empathy. I am glad to see some good things happening for the environment and to save our world. Take care and stay safe. I wish you all the best in 2022, a happy New Year!

  3. I have not seen the movie yet. "My gratitude goes to those across the globe who do what's right in small or large doses to make us safer." I am hanging on to that. Your post gives food for thought and your images are always uplifting. A Very Happy New Year to you and yours :)

  4. We thought Don't Look Up was hilarious but kind of depressing at the same time.

  5. I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. It's on my list. I know it is a parody on the world we live in today, denial.

  6. Your post and photos are awesome ~ you write well about how I also feel ~ it is all very confusing at times and one has to decide for one self as best they can ~ Movie sounds like a good take on the 'human condition.'
    thanks,

    Wishing you a sweet day,

  7. We watched Don't Look Up last week. To me it was a huge reminder of what has been happening in the States both politically and philosophically. I hope that compromise and working towards a common good can pull us back together as individual nations and worldwide, but it's going to take a lot more people doing the right thing to get there. Happy New Year. - Margy

  8. I haven’t seen Don't Look Up, but can guess the contents from the title and what other commenters wrote. I was reminded of Deep Impact dealing with a comet on collision course with Earth. As you once thought, America, Russia, and people fought against the common enemy/danger in that film. All your images are impressive, Maria. It is a beautiful image; your Buddha is contemplating in the snow-falling starry universe.

  9. Maria - a well written post (as usual). We watched Don't Look Up between Christmas and New Year's, and I was glad to see someone make such a movie, but also depressed that it's even necessary. Each of us needs to continue to do our part to make things better. It will take all of us! Happy New Year!

  10. For the moment I couldn't change direction, unfortunately ! The past year was one of the worst I ever had, and it doesn't seem to change, maybe when this winter is over it will get better. I haven't heard of this movie, in the moment I really need to watch something funny !

  11. I have never seen a movie that so often made me want to cry and laugh at the same time. I thought it had been written to satirize the Covid Crisis, but then realized it was meant to be the even more critical climate. As you point out people in this country (and I guess maybe yours too?) cannot agree on anything. I guess we just have to do what we can. (And hold hands with those we love up until the bitter end?)

  12. I am not a movie watcher, so I am quite sure I will not see it, but there seems to be little that ever unites humans in a common cause. If the threat of irrevocably altering the life-giving chemistry of the planet won't do it, I don't know what will. IN BC you are on the forefront of the changes being wrought and to quote some wise sage from the past, "You ain't seen nuthin yet!" Will those sombre truths, or the pandemic, bring out our better angels and spur us toward cooperation, mutual respect and the urge to achieve the best overall good? Not a chance!
